However, today there was a dark brown, average looking package scrunched deep inside my mailbox. I never get packages in the mail so this was kind of exciting. I noticed there wasnât any postage stamped on the package. There wasnât a return address written on the package, either. It only had my name and my address written on the front. It also had the word âfragileâ stamped with red ink on the package.
I think they were trying to make it look like it had been mailed and they wanted the postmen to take extra care with it. How could it have been mailed to me without any postage stamps or postage marks on the package. I was a little afraid to open it. I didnât know who itâs from or what it could be. However, curiosity got the better of me so I opened it. Looking back, I shouldâve taken more caution before opening it. I really should have called Detective Joe first. Too late, itâs open now and Iâm finding it a bit cool whatâs inside. Someone had sent me a VHS tape. I felt like I was inside a âMission Impossibleâ episode where the recording says, âThis tape will self-destruct in five seconds.â Unfortunately, this isnât Hollywood and Iâm not an actor. Part of me is still struggling with the fact that this is really happening. I donât know why but I always thought this stuff happens to other people, not me. Itâs silly to think that though when I look at how bizarre my life has already been up to this point.
After staring at the tape for a while and actually giving it some thought, I chose not to watch it alone. I decided to call Detective Joe. I will let him decide what to do with it and how best to handle this. He asked me if I could bring the tape down to the police station. He was still there, and they have all kinds of techy equipment we can use to watch it on. They might even be able to find out through their superior investigative methods where the tape came from.
Stephanie was already at her fathers for the weekend, so I got in the car and drove downtown to the police station. Even though I wasnât getting any child support from my ex, I didnât feel it was fair to not let Stephanie spend time with her father. I struggled financially and he knew it, but I never held it over his head, or used it as a weapon against him. I desperately wanted him to be a good father and involved in her life. Unfortunately, it never lasted long. He was a deadbeat in so many other ways.
I finally made my way to the police station. I must be anxious because it felt like it took a really long time to get there. Detective Joe met me at the door and I handed him the tape. I also brought the bag it was in to show him how it had arrived without any postage.
